Attention Mom's, Dad's & Grandparents Take Photos and Journal Jot

Memories last a lifetime is a quote I have always heard.  Unfortunately as we get older there are times when we forget certain special times with our children, family and friends.

Since I lost my only child at the age of 17, I advise everyone to take as many photos as you can and don't stop when they get out of that "cute" stage.  Keep taking pics their whole life.  Pictures are one of the greatest mind joggers of memories every.  It is rewarding to see a picture and then remember the time.

I always tell people all that I have is pictures and memories.  Now to the memories, I am so afraid of forgetting something.  Your situation is different, start to "Journal Jot" every day.  "Journal Jot" is each and every day jot down something about the day concerning your children, husband, parents, friends & who ever you come into contact that day.  "Journal Jot" is different than journaling, of course I made this phrase up when I started to remember things from the past.  For example usually when you journal you write nice sentences and give it some emotional touches here and there.  "Journal Jots" are like the following and take less time.
  • Dustin hit a grand slam 07-15-2001
  • Mom hit a deer with her car
  • My hubby brought me beautiful flowers
  • My best friend Leah sent me a card
That is it.  Not a lot of thought process or time to "Journal Jot."  These "Journal Jots" will mean the world to you as you look back and it jogs your memory to a happy time or to something very important.

This week as I sat watching America's Got Talent the Backstreet Boys sang.  Honestly I didn't hear a word they said as the cobwebs of my mind were cleared and a beautiful memory came to me that I had forgotten.  My son may have been around 11 years old when he came from his room and handed me a CD and told to listen to "The Perfect Fan."  He then said, "It's all about you Mom."

I scrambled to get to a CD player to hear this song.  Then I sat there crying.  Why?  Because he realized I was there for him and I knew he loved me for that.  You see all through his sports....ahem....blush...everyone knew I was there.  I was a big cheerleader for the whole team.

Sharing some of my favorite photos.

Don't put it off start today to "Journal Jot."  Use a regular notebook, a steno pad (do they still make these?  lol) just start jotting down special events, saying, songs, everything needs to be jotted.

Start today taking pictures of everything you can!

Manic, Maddening, Mindful Mostly, Merry, Musing, Monday

I don't know about you but I was glad to see Monday come.  Of course I don't work and I am at home.  The weekends to me means lots of yard work.  Had to get lots done because this week it will be in the 90' all week.  Can't stand the heat and working in it.

Today is the day to make plans and set goals.  Always remember to do that.

Later today I am going to try to get all my Blog and Linky Parties set on a calendar as to not miss them or be late and list at 200. lol

It is therapy day for Michael so the morning will be filled with that.  Once home I want to start on my mirror redo.  Can't wait to see the finished project.  Also I want to finish my screened in back porch.  It needs to be done before summer is over!

Have a wonder Monday.  What are you plans?  Goal?  Please share.

A New Trend for Mondays

Yes it is Monday already for those who work outside the home.  The two fastest days of the week are your two days off.  There is just not escaping it Monday still comes around as the second day of the week.  Accept it, make it exciting.

Almost everyone I knows hate Mondays.  Let's start a new trend and start loving Mondays for a change.  Make it more of a fun day than a Mundane day.

Mondays are always good for making goals and plans for starters.  It would be good to have Monday evening set aside for just you.

You could go for your favorite coffee at the little nook

Take a long hot tub bath with candles and scents all around.

Find half an hour to escape into a great magazine without interruptions or journal.

Make Mondays "Family Game" night.  Get out the board not bored games and have a wonderful evening with family.  Share types of music being played in the background.

Get a pedicure one Monday a month, awwww doesn't that sound wonderful?  A massage?

So many ideas to make your Mondays a day to look forward to instead of dreading them.  Maybe it will catch on with your co-workers, family and friends.

From me to you have a fabulous Monday.

What would you like to do on Mondays that you could look forward to?  Please share your ideas.

Showing Love to Some Abandoned Treasures

Inspiration has struck from several of the blogs that I have been visited this week.  I have several items that need love and attention.  My thought has always been to leave it in the original condition.  That has been a ground in thought for me.  Well I have come to the conclusion that it is time to give some of the items new life and truly make them a treasure.  You see I love the rust, the chips, the way things are but I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I want to share some projects that I wholeheartedly intend on working on this coming week.  Choosing which one to do first will be my problem.  Here they are in there just like I bought them.  They were posted on my Facebook for ideas so I am going with the popular vote and what I like.

The red on the sled will be left along.  The wood will be getting spruced up.  This one is easy peasy, right?

This beauty was something I just had to have.  It is finished with the 1980's style antiquing.  It has gorgeous beveled mirrors.  I actually have a plan for it.  I am going to strip it and then distress it.  In my bedroom I have a dresser with the waterfall sides but no mirror so I thought I would redo this and use the dresser as a makeup area.  I was proud of my idea.  What do you think?

This lamp has been around since I can remember.  A friend of my Mom's gave it to her in the 1950's but said it was from the 1940's.  Now that I am older and wiser I love this lamp.  The lamp shade is deplorable I couldn't even bring myself to share of photo of it with the shade on it now.  There's a first time for everything and I am going to make a lamp shade for this beautiful lamp.  Let's see what I can come up with.

That's all that will be on the burner this week and probably next.  We are having so much rain and I need to work outside for the mirror.

Cross your fingers and please stop back to see the finished results.

No I did NOT milk cows

Let's settle some misconceptions about being raised on a farm and being a farm girl.  Let's see there is the one that the farm girl is easy if you know what I mean.  Farm girls are not educated and do not graduate from school.  We know proper English grammar.  Settle in for tid bits of farm life.

First off I was born in 1956 so when I was being raised on a farm we didn't have many amenities that we have today.  Our TV was a blonde black and white model.  We got three channels and only watched TV in the evening.  During the day the children were to be playing and active not sitting in front of the TV.

When summer came so did the work to be done.  We planted a huge garden.  The next is debatable depending on who you talk to, me or Mom.  I say I had to weed and work in the garden.  She says I did not do so.  I distinctly remember picking strawberries and eating more than I picked.  mmmm so good.  The hard part came when it was harvest time and all the vegetables were canned or blanched for the freezer.

When I was really young and was potty trained we had an outhouse and no running water in the kitchen.  I was always afraid I would fall in the hole.  During the night we had chamber pot.  I cannot imagine doing this now.  I had to walk through the chickens, which scare me to death.  One day coming back from the outhouse I was attacked by a rooster.  Mom said we had him for dinner that night.  When we moved to a house with a bathroom I kept flushing the toilet because it was amazing.

The outhouse.  We didn't have a quarter moon on ours that I remember.

The Chamber pot and a pan to wash up with.

In the kitchen the sink had a pump to get the water from the well into the house.  Of course it was cold so if you wanted hot water you had to heat on the stove first.

This is a pretty one I am sure ours didn't look this nice.

Dad farmed until he was 72 years of age.  Farming was in his blood and I come from a long line of farmers.  He had corn, soy beans, wheat, cows, pigs and lots of chores.

A corn field which I know monsters lurked in between the rows; I was simply a big baby.

A wheat field.  I just love the color of wheat.

A soybean field.

The livestock had to be tended to no matter what.  Everyday corn was ground for the cows and the pigs fed.  Again big baby here.  Terrified of cows, then.  Loved pigs.

Now as for being a farm girl I played outside mostly.  I did have a play room in the summer kitchen.  That is where all of my dress up clothes, jewelry, toy kitchen, stove, etc was set up.  I spent hours in there.

Something that drives me crazy is that people that don't know better and soon you will know.  Aren't you just happy as can be?  The difference between hay and straw.  Straw is ALWAYS called hay.  They must think we are stupid or something.  There are big differences between the two.  Straw comes from the wheat stalks after the wheat is harvested.  Hay comes from a hay field filled with weeds, grass, thistle and such.  Here are some pics that will show you the difference.

The above is a bale of hay.  It is slightly green from the grass, etc.  Nobody likes to sit on a bale of hay.  A thistle or two will get you in the butt.

The above is straw.  Golden like the wheat it came from.  Sitting on a bale of straw is okay.

I have dogs and cats galore.  Cats would come from everywhere and consider themselves at home with plenty of mice to keep them fed and busy.  This to me was normal.  All kids have a dog or a cat, right?

So many things I wished I had learned like how to make butter or a recipe for home made ice cream, or to bake bread from scratch.  I know I can learn now but why?  The store sells bread.  Seriously I do know how to make bread but not homemade ice cream like Mom did.

I would watch Mom churn butter is a churn like this one.

Many hot, sultry nights were spent on our porch and having the neighbors in and make homemade ice cream.  As a child we got to turn it at the beginning then the men took over because it became to hard for us to do.  I thought that was fun.

Most of all I miss all the sights of being on a farm.  Barns, silos, barbed wire fences, sunsets, and sun rise out in the open there was nothing like it.  So very beautiful and it went on for miles, just as did the stars at night.  I would lay on a blanket and try to count the stars, find the little and big dipper, watch for falling stars and enjoy them glistening in the sky.  To me, even now I think the moon looks like it has a man's face on it.  Do you think so?  Now we know what the moon looks like close up.  If at night you take a peek at the evening sky, you'll see there is a man on the moon.

Last but not least.  I did not milk cows.  I can remember maybe doing it once in my life.  Cows scared me too much to milk them.  Ol'Bessie would kick too and I didn't want to get kicked.  I wish I had a dollar for every time someone had assumed that I had milked a cow or knew how.  Quite the contrary.  I have no idea how to do so.

I moved to a small town in 1992 and have been in town since.  It was hard to get used to the noise, lights, horns honking, having neighbors that knew all your business and they would watch you.  What's up with that?  Mom is too cute.  She moved to town with us in 2011 after Daddy died.  She didn't want to live in the country by herself.  She knows more about my neighbors than I do.  She knows all of their names, etc  I have not a clue.

I grew up different but only with experiences only being raised on the farm.  I have a college education, I used to know proper English grammar and would now if I made myself think.  I was raised differently than most people I know.  One thing I have in common with many.  I love life, I love blogging and all that goes with it.  Together we are eclectic and blend together like a fine tapestry.

I just don't milk cows.
