1930's Rural Kentucky Ways

My Mother was born in Kentucky and lived a very meager lifestyle.  There was a total of nine children; she was next to the oldest.  Here are some things she had shared with me.

MAKING COTTAGE CHEESE

They would take the cream of the fresh milk from their cow.  Wrapped the cream into cheesecloth and hang on the clothesline to curdle and thus make cottage cheese.  Can you imagine anyone trying this today?

STORING APPLES

In the fall the apples were plentiful.  They dug and deep hole in the ground.  First layer the bottom with dried leaves, put apples on top and continue to layer.  They had fresh apples all winter long.  I believe they did the same for potatoes.

I love to hear these stories and felt I needed to pass them on.

Need ideas and suggestions please!

 

This is a wonderful old bug sprayer.  I would like to do something with it to display.  Loving the patina, the dark brown amber glass, the wooden handle.  Hopefully you may have some ideas for me.  It is just too cool to be boxed up.
